Mirrorless Camera for Travel or Nature, Serious or Novice

Dogwood Blossom, Spring, 2017 Clyde, NC with Sony a6000, f/50 lens, and 10mm extension tube.

Finally, the little camera that could, does. When walking around Lake Junaluska one should  be carrying a camera for the wildlife and scenics. But alas, after carrying compact cameras, and heavy DSLR’s, I was always wanting. Then, I was prompted to try a Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Power Zoom Lens. You can click on this link which has a lot of information or check out the short review of this camera, and a special offer.

Using outlets that have a liberal return policy allows one to try out various product to make sure they fit. If they don’t, simply return them.

About the Sony A6000…

There is a lot built into this camera; but, for the longest time I hesitated to recommend it as a  camera for someone just starting out. Then this afternoon I decided to add a 10mm extension tube to the kit lens that came with the camera, a 16-50mm lens. With the Extension tube we got closer to the subject and defused the background.  My set cost $65 but their are some less at Amazon.

Amazing. The images you see here are the grab images. They are hand held, and as you can see, nice soft background with sharp image.

So, I’m changing my tune. This camera has all the settings. Automatic, Manual, Aperture priority, Shutter Priority, Movie, Panorama, as well as individual scenes and more.

Some of the technical aspects…

  • 24 MP APS-C CMOS sensor
  • ISO 100-25600 (expandable to 51200)
  • Hybrid AF with 179-point focal plane phase-detection and 25 contrast detect points
  • Up to 11 FPS continuous shooting
  • 3-inch tilting LCD with 921,000 dots
  • OLED electronic viewfinder with 100% coverage and 1.4 million dots
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and NFC
  • plus, the camera take amazing videos!
Three Cameras:
Left: Nikon d300 w/18-200mm lens, wt.4lbs; Middle: Sony A7II w/Sony 18-200mm lens, Mirrorless, Full Frame, 3lbs; Right: Sony A6000 w/ 16-50mm lens, Mirrorless, Wt.1Lb.

All three cameras above will take good pictures. The one I like for this discussion is the Sony A6000 the one on the right. A telephoto lens can be added to this body; however, for travel, it’s the 16-50mm lens which actually produces a 24-75 image in 35mm film terms.  This camera lens also has a very good built in image stabilizer, and the camera is a very fastest focus, at an amazing 11 frames per second. Yet, you can slow down for that delicate wild flower or special vista on your travels.

“I can’t do the steps necessary in manual setting as fast as the Sony A6000 on Auto.”

The special price of the Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Power Zoom Lens at Amazon is $598 including the 16-50mm kit lens. Regular price $798. For the 55-210 mm lens, add an additional $200. Not bad for the complete package. Pick up some extra batteries, a couple of memory cards and you’re good to go.  Incidentally, you can get to the site by clicking Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Power Zoom Lens. There are also nifty short videos for more information. Below is the Promotion.

During the initial learning of the camera, I found that the “Auto” setting assured me of excellent images. The camera is so intuitive.

As a trip to France was scheduled, I used the setting at the image on the left and ended up with about 80% keepers compared to about 30% with my DSLR.

That allowed me to use the camera right out of the box. For tricky indoor situations, like inside a church, the camera was a charm.

At higher ISO, most cameras pick up “noise.” This little guy is very clean, even as high  as 3200ISO.

What others are saying…

According to Photography Life, https://photographylife.com/mirrorless-vs-dslr/ , With the rise of cameras without a mirror (hence the name “mirrorless”), most manufacturers have already realized that traditional DSLR systems are not going to be the driving force of camera sales in the future. It makes sense from the cost standpoint alone, but if we really look at the current innovation

Mirrorless cameras are now outselling DSLR almost 3 to 1.

About the view finder …

And, if your current camera only has a LCD Screen to see what the scene looks like, most of the time outdoors, on a sunny day, the reflection is so great you can’t see the scene. The Sony A6000 has a “view finder,” to view the scene with the eye, holding the camera close to your face. What you see is what you get.

I’ve waited a year and half before feeling comfortable enough to recommend this Camera. But when I took those images above, around my yard, I was thinking how one could start with this, then grow into. Many of us own a smart phone or ipad; but, too often outdoors we need the viewfinder – the LCD screen doesn’t work!
